Shakti Shala

Steve Pyka, a direct student of Larry Schultz, the creator of Rocket Yoga, opened AstaYoga with Rene Henley in 2009 as a place where people could find a genuine sense of strength, peace and community. Steve has over 10 years of experience teaching and has trained hundreds of people internationally who are practicing and sharing the Rocket all over the world.

This 5-Day Practice Immersion is designed for any person at any level in their practice who is interested in learning more about Rocket Vinyasa Yoga. Through daily practice and group discussions, your existing concept of what yoga is and what it is for will be challenged and expanded. Live a life in the week of a Rocket Yogi. See how a simple, gentle, systematic and powerful approach to yoga can transform how you relate to yourself and the world around you.

The practice week will include:

a Wednesday (evening practice only): 6-7:30p

a Thursday: 930am-6pm

a Friday: 930am-6pm

a Saturday: 930am-6pm

a Sunday: 930am-6pm

Wednesday, 11/2 (evening practice only)

6:00 PM-7:30PM Practice: Rocket 1

Thursday, 11/3

9:30-10:45AM Practice: Rocket Mixed Levels

11:00am-4:00PM: Understanding The Rocket: The Science of Sequencing

We will explore the history and evolution of the Rocket as an outgrowth of the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa system that Rocket’s founder, Larry Schultz, practiced for seven years under the guidance of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. While the system operates on the same principles as Ashtanga Vinyasa (breath, bandha, drishti), the philosophy and approach diverge significantly. The Rocket exists as a weekly system, and we will break down the structure and routines of this modular practice to see how it can be adapted to fit any practitioner at any level in any amount of time. In this first module, we will explore and learn the core features of the four basic routines (Mixed Levels, I, II, III).

4:30-6:00PM Practice: Rocket I

Friday, 11/4

9:30-11:00AM Practice: Rocket Mixed Levels

11:00-4:00PM: Teaching the Rocket: Communicating Effectively to Facilitate Empowerment

Unlike many other yoga systems, the Rocket seeks to awaken the Inner Teacher, allowing students the opportunity to turn inward and express themselves authentically. We will investigate the elements of successfully facilitating a Rocket Vinyasa practice, such as verbal economy, astute observation, minimally invasive adjustments and consistent attention to the breath. The Rocket helps people to uncover latent potential, but stresses the importance of releasing ambition and embracing the moment. Your voice is your power, and we will have an opened conversation about how to effectively use your voice to bring out the best in your students. We will also explore and learn the essentials of the Rocket I.

4:30-6:00PM Practice: Rocket II

Saturday, 11/5

9:30-11:00AM Practice: Rocket Mixed Levels

11:00-4:00PM: Practicing the Rocket: Inversion and Transition Clinic

In the Rocket Vinyasa system, creativity is encouraged, exploration is essential, and the breath is non-negotiable. We will talk about floating, flying, levitating, and all the tricks and techniques involved in making the practice look effortless. We give up grasping, we open up to letting go and we invite excellence into our practice each time we step on the mat. Rocket isn’t about what you can do, but how you do it, and the better you understand this and demonstrate it, the more powerful you become as a cheerleader for others in their journey. We’ll continue to investigate the routines and see how they blend into a Rocket III, and also how they can be modified and adapted.

4:30-6:00 PM Practice: Rocket I

Sunday, 11/6

9:30-11:00 AM Practice: Primary-ish

11:00 AM-4:00 PM: Living the Rocket: Taking Ashtanga and Rocket Philosophy Into the World

Larry would say, “The Rocket is all about freedom.” This is going to mean something different for everyone, so what does it mean for you? The Rocket is a headspace that we get into, where we experience our power, clarify our minds and expand our potential. The practice doesn’t show up in postures; it shows up in caring for ourselves, making choices that serve us, letting go of what doesn’t and ultimately, showing up as the best version of ourselves in our relationships.  Yoga is about dissolving the illusion of separateness and isolation, connecting with your purpose and moving toward your goals. We’ll cover any remaining inquiries and dig into the Ashtanga of Patanjali, connecting the eight limbs to the Rocket to see where yoga is showing up in our lives.

4:30PM-6:00PM Practice: Rocket III
